Thailand recently tightened its seafood import procedures
The Thai Ministry of Fisheries recently issued a new announcement on the import procedures for aquatic products, entitled "Regulations, Methods and Conditions for Application for Import Permits for Aquatic Animals or Aquatic Animal Products", which revised part of the existing procedures and aims to tighten and strengthen the import process for aquatic products. It will take effect on May 7.
Prior to this, some people in the Thai aquatic industry said that the oversupply of imported seafood has led to a drop in domestic aquatic product prices, thus losing competitiveness.
The main changes in the new regulations include:
1. Imported mixed aquatic products, such as packaged products made from a variety of aquatic products, must be equipped with a packing list, listing the detailed information of all ingredients, including aquatic species, dosage, etc.;
2. Importers must store them at government-designated locations or logistics centers so that customs officers can check them at any time;
3. Non-Thai fishing vessels must indicate their port entry application and number in the documents during the import process;
4. Thai officials will appoint specific officials to conduct product inspections, involving all aquatic product trade processes and procedural compliance.
